Tutoring Schedules
-
Given the large number of students in need of intensive tutoring support, in addition to challenges with providing after-school transportation and with student attendance after school, NPS will provide tutoring during the regularly scheduled school day according to the following models for elementary and middle school students.
Grades 3-5
In grades 3-5, instruction during literacy and math blocks has been configured to provide students access to whole-group instruction, along with flexible group support for grade-level content. To ensure all who qualify for additional tutoring through the ALL in VA Tutoring Plan receive it, 30 minutes will be utilized from the end of each established 2-hour literacy block. Tutoring for acceleration of learning to close learning gaps for both reading and math will take place during this time. Students who require both reading and math will alternate days for each subject, while students who need only reading or math will receive the appropriate content each day. This schedule will ensure students receive the required time for direct tutoring each week. In addition to the 30 minutes of direct tutoring every day, students are required to have a minimum of 15 minutes every other day on Lexia and Edmentum to support their individualized math and/or reading needs. To support the direct tutoring, additional University Instructor tutors will be placed in all elementary schools based on the number of students who qualify for the ALL in VA Tutoring Plan. Additionally, students who are already receiving high intensity tutoring will continue with their program as scheduled (e.g., third grade students who receive PALS tutoring).

Students will be tutored in groups of 5, rotating as noted below. To support the additional direct tutoring time for students, additional University Instructor tutors will be placed in every school with grade 6 through 8 students based on the number of students who qualify for the ALL in VA Tutoring Plan.

For students who qualify for 18 weeks of tutoring in reading and/or math, tutoring will begin during Quarter 3, and students who qualify for tutoring support, with permission from their parents/guardians, will be scheduled to have the math and/or literacy support blocks in their schedules and will receive tutoring as noted above on alternating days. If a parent denies the participation in a support block, after school options will be made available, as staffing permits.
